This is really good stuff
by .. John W. Craig (Colorado Springs, CO)
Is AppleCare worthwhile? Here's my story:
My wife just started graduate school last week, and was grumbling that the battery on her early 2008 15" MacBook Pro wouldn't last a full day of classes.
For some reason, the next day she tried to snap a self-portrait with Photo Booth, and the iSight camera wouldn't work. We made an appointment and set off to the Apple store (five minutes away).
The genius did the usual voodoo with the PMMU and PRAM, then booted off of the Apple network, none of which brought the camera back, so he said it wouldn't take too long to fix it with a new screen assembly.
He brought up the MBP's repair history, looked up and said, "You qualify for a new Mac." It seems that after replacing the DVD drive, the hard drive, the logic board, and the trackpad, the iSight was the trick.
We went home with a new i5. That's one way to get extended battery life! I installed Cody Krieger's gfxCardStatus to keep the NVIDIA GPU from burning up the battery. The i5 runs way cooler on the Intel integrated graphics, and the NVIDIA is just a click away.
Oh, and we qualify for a rebate of about $80 on the remaining months of AppleCare for the old MBP! Altogether a good day!
Excellent!

Expensive necessity
by .. KSBAY ()
Please note, this version of the Applecare Protection Plan is ONLY for the Macbook Pro 15" and 17".
The Macbook and the Macbook Pro 13" are covered under another version of the Applecare Protection Plan - AppleCare Protection Plan MC246LL/A - For Portable Apple Computers 13 Inches and Below
The Applecare Protection Plan - an expensive necessity if you buy an apple laptop.
What most people don't know is that Apple doesn't make the hard drives or the logicboards (motherboards) or the processors or the DVD burners inside their machines. Like all computer manufacturers, Apple sources its parts from component manufacturers like Seagate, Nvidia, Intel, Sony etc etc. These parts just like all electronic components can and may fail after a period of time. Once a part fails and if your macbook pro's one year standard warranty is over, Apple charges extremely high fees to repair or replace parts.
For example - Motherboard replacement - $800 to $1000. Superdrive replacement - $200 to $300. LCD screen replacement - $600 to $800) It's better to pay for Applecare once than pay Apple exorbitant repair fees every time a part fails.
Basically, the A.P.P. is a 2 year warranty extension to your apple laptop's standard one year hardware warranty. It provides unlimited phone support and hardware diagnosis. It also offers Mail-in repair for Mac notebooks using a prepaid shipping box provided by Apple and service by an apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
The A.P.P. also gives you global repair coverage so if a hardware issues arises while you're in another country and there's an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider near by, you can take your mac in for diagnosis and repair.
It does not offer any sort of damage protection or on-site repair.
Please remember to buy the A.P.P. if you plan to do so before the first year of ownership is up. If you bought your machine on X Date 2009 - buy the A.P.P.before X Date 2010. Apple will not honor an A.P.P. policy bought even 2 days after the first year is over (in most cases unless you get lucky and speak to a friendly agent on the phone willing to relax the rules a bit)
Just like before, I HATE to be recommending an extended warranty, but it's a necessary evil with Apple products. There is no guarantee that something will go wrong with your expensive mac notebook after the first year but if something does go wrong after the first year, it's better to be covered by the A.P.P. and avoid paying those exorbitant repair/replacement costs.
NOTE - Don't buy Applecare from Apple. Shop around - there are good deals to be found at Authorised Apple resellers and other legit online outlets. Amazon used to be one of the best places to purchase an A.P.P. from but Amazon has raised it's price also. It used to sell the A.P.P. for $299 dollars, but has now increased the price to $321 and it's been stuck there for a while. I have no idea why Amazon raised the price but you should buy when the price is low or a price correction occurs. Hope this helps :)
UPDATE - As of today - July 22 2010, Amazon is selling Applecare for $260.38 which is a savings of $88.62 (25%) when compared to buying it from it from an Applestore. Now would be a good time to buy.
Hope this helps!
do NOT BUY! a WASTE of money.
by .. D. G. Ahn (Chicago, Illinois United States)
I bought this protection program a year and a half ago. When my computer stopped working due to a battery defect, Apple computer refused to repair it citing the computer has wear. Considering normal everyday wear can occur from a college student, it seems very unreasonable to buy this product. Especially since computers will show manufacturing defect within a year (which is covered by warranty anyway). Apple should come up with a better program considering other manufacturers such as hp and asus have warranty and accidental damage protection for a year after purchase for free and an extension for less than $150.
The lack of customer care really made me think again about buying a mac for three times the price of a PC.
The positive reviews that describe awesome care through apple are illusional.
Customers who are impressed by apple's treatment are fooled. The kind of service they appreciate are the kind of service that other manufacturers have been providing for years without flashy advertisement.
Applecare protection plan is just another ponsi scheme put out by apple.
