My Passport for Mac 500-GB External HDD 5 by .. B. F. Diggins Jr. ()
WD My Passport for Mac - 500 Gigabyte Portable Hard Drive

HARDWARE Rating - Very Good

My Passport for Mac is a compact, stylish, and well-designed device. It complements the form factor of my MacBook Pro computer and has excellent storage capacity.

The 500-GB external hard drive was easy to install. The retail box contained the drive, a small USB 2.0 cable, WD SmartWare software, and a Quick Install Guide. You simply connect the drive to your computer via the cable and install the software, which comes preloaded on the drive.

The USB 2.0 external drive is powered through the computer's USB 2.0 port and does not require an additional power source. It is compatible with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) or Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) operating systems. I use the Leopard OS and had no hardware or software installation problems.

SOFTWARE Rating - Fair

Apple Time Machine - During installation, I opted to use My Passport drive with Time Machine as the primary backup software. Initially, I thought this was a good choice. Time Machine provides hourly scheduled backups when your computer is on and the external drive is connected. Time Machine also allows you to select which file sets (categories) you want to exclude from each backup to conserve external disk space.

Initially, Time Machine makes a complete backup of all the files on your system. As you make changes, Time Machine backs up only the files that have changed.

I was pleased with how smoothly the initial Backup of my internal hard disk files went. The visual displays showed the file categories and their sizes on the Macintosh HD and My Passport drive, based on a color-coded scheme.

Then, one day without any warning, I got a `Device Removal' pop up message, which contained these words:

The device you removed was not properly put away. Data might have been lost
or damaged. Before you unplug your device, you must first select its icon in the Finder and choose Eject from the File menu. [OK]

This message became a recurring irritant and resulted in several failed Time Machine backups. At first I could not understand how it applied to me, since I was not planning to unplug the external drive. Later, after consulting with WDSupport technicians, I learned that this is just another nemesis of the Mac operating system.

In essence, there are three recommended shutdown procedures for a Mac with a USB or FireWire drive (peripheral device) installed:

1. In some cases, shutting down the system without properly unmounting the drive results in data corruption. If the operating system (OS) stops the device while data remains in the drive cache, data can be lost or file system damage can occur. To avoid possible data corruption, Western Digital recommends that FireWire and USB drives be properly unmounted from the Mac OS prior to turning off the system.

To safely disconnect the drive, simply drag the drive icon to the Trash. This will assure that all data are properly cleared from the drive cache before the drive is removed. At this point the FireWire or USB data cable can be safely removed and the drive and Mac system can be powered off.

2. Select either of the WD SmartWare and My Passport icons, then go to the File drop-down menu and select "Eject SmartWare" and "Eject MyPassport" to safely unmount the external hard drive.

3. Click on the WD SmartWare icon (located in the status bar) and stroll down to the My Passport Essential item. From this item, select "Unmount CD" and "Unmount Volumes" to unmount the external hard drive.

I could not resolve this random `pop up' message while using Time Machine to backup my files. None of the above recommended peripheral shutdown/dismounting procedures eliminated the popup Device Removal messages.

After I turned on the computer, the WD SmartWare and My Passport icons reappeared on the Desktop indicating that they were operating. However, if you only perform a Restart of the computer, they do not display on the Desktop and the drive may not be connected.

WD SmartWare - This software provides automatic backups for any file changes. After turning off Time Machine and running WD SmartWare, I have not experienced any of the random `Device Removal' pop up messages. Prior to shutdown, I usually unmount the drive using the procedure cited in item 3 (above).

To date, this software seems to be working as advertised. I have had My Passport for over three months and I am very pleased with its performance. Email support from Western Digital has been timely and helpful.

Western Digital My Passport for Mac 320BG 5 by .. C. M. Monroe (Orange County, CA USA)
I needed a back-up hard drive for a project that I was working on. I chose this one because of its size, appearance, capacity and price. It fulfilled all of the above and was extremely easy to use. I would definitely recommend this product!!

Nice Backup Storage 5 by .. O. Doyle (Lexington, KY USA)
I bought this 320 GB Passport to backup my daughters iMac to clone her hard drive using SuperDuper. It works like a charm. Very Macintosh friendly, affordable, and fast. Anyone using a Mac and wanting to backup a smaller hard drive will like it.

Great product, very easy 5 by .. mboundy (San Francisco, CA)
This is a great back-up drive. I can use it either with Time Machine, which is so simple (just plug it in), or with the software that comes installed. The accompanying software is already on the drive (no disc to install) and shows a break down of the sizes and types of files on your computer and the drive. It is very easy to use and is a great visual.

I also love how small and portable the drive is. Would definitely recommend it.

External Hard Drive for a Mac 5 by .. Steven Stomel (CHERRY HILL, NJ, US)
My wife loves to take pictures. She has 1,000's of pictures that we have downloaded to her Mac over the years. One day she got concerned that what would happen to her pictures if something happened to her computer. We decided to back up her pictures to an external hard drive. We tried a couple devices before finding the Western Digital for Mac. There was a compatibility problem with Windows and I could not get the other devices to be recognized by the Mac as a hard drive. The Western digital was immediately recognized as soon as we plugged it in. The picture folders were transferred in a few minutes and our backup problem has been solved. The Western Digital was basically Plug and Play. I would recommend it to anyone who wants extra storage for an Apple product.
